The Department of Visual & Media Arts (VMA) at Emerson College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or Artist-in-Residence (teaching focused non-tenure-track) position in multi-camera television production. This full-time position begins on August 20, 2020.  The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through teaching, creative work, service activities and engagement with students outside of the classroom.

Emerson College is committed to an active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity—in people, in the curriculum, in the co-curriculum, and in the College’s intellectual, social, cultural, and geographical communities. Emerson endorses a framework of inclusive excellence, which recognizes that institutional excellence comes from fully engaging with diversity in all aspects of institutional activities. Emerson is committed to strengthening communities, including our workplace, by fostering the development of the intercultural competencies necessary for meaningful citizenship in an increasingly complex, pluralistic society.

The Department of Visual and Media Arts is a vibrant and engaged community of artists, scholars and professionals, with over 100 full- and part-time faculty members, 1500 undergraduate majors, and more than 100 MFA graduate students.  The department offers general education courses in art history, a BA degree that includes both media studies and media production, a BFA in media production, an MFA in writing for film and television, and an MFA in film and media art.

Emerson College is the nation’s only four-year institution dedicated exclusively to majors in communication and the arts in a liberal arts context. Its main campus is located in the center of the dynamic multicultural city of Boston, in close proximity to major publishing houses, arts institutions and research centers. The college also has campuses in Los Angeles and the Netherlands. Emerson College enrolls over 4,535 graduate and undergraduate students from more than 59 countries and all 50 states.

Candidates should have an MFA in film/television/media, or a terminal degree in a related field, or significant professional television production experience comparable to a terminal degree. Professional experience as a producer or director of scripted multi-camera television programming is required. Experience with comedy production is strongly preferred, as is teaching experience at the college level. The successful applicant will help revise the VMA Department’s television production curriculum and create deeper connections to other departments, programs, and student organizations.

Primary responsibilities will be teaching introductory-to-advanced undergraduate classes and MFA-level graduate classes in multi-camera television/video production both in the studio and in the field. Courses should serve students in the interdepartmental major in Comedic Arts, in addition to Visual and Media Arts majors. Working collaboratively with The Emerson Channel co-curricular student group is a key component of the position. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, student mentorship, support for admissions, and serving on department and college committees.

The Visual and Media Arts Department offers a dynamic curriculum of exceptional range to prepare students to live and work in an increasingly multicultural and global society. Upholding the principle that diversity enriches education, Emerson College provides students with opportunities to learn from individuals who bring deep knowledge, different experiences, and unfamiliar perspectives to bear on teaching and creative work. More generally, the College is committed to infusing diversity into the curriculum, co-curricular offerings, and other activities as the means to develop community and intellectual growth. To support and sustain this community of learning, applicants demonstrating a record of significant engagement with issues of social, economic, racial and/or gender justice and equity in their work will be given preference.

Applicants must complete an online application form and submit a letter of application, a current CV, and contact information for three references. The letter of application should include statements on creative work, teaching philosophy and diversity and inclusion. Successful candidates will be contacted for samples of creative work as well as materials that demonstrate effective teaching, project mentoring, and engagement with diversity in the classroom. Each material should be saved as a separate PDF or Word doc. and uploaded into the upload section where it requests your CV. Although the upload section just shows "upload CV" - you should upload all materials in this section as the separate documents. These materials must be submitted through Emerson’s applicant tracking system at the following link: Assistant Professor or Artist-in-Residence, Multi-Camera Television.

Review of applications will begin October 1, 2019 and continue until the position is filled.
